One Genre for Creative Gamers Takes a Hit

Fans of the creative music genre have cause for lament today as Activision Blizzard Inc. announced yesterday that it would be discontinuing work on any future installment of its Guitar Hero series.

Conventional wisdom cites dwindling sales projections and a waning of the music game fad in general.  Many fans will recall the recent sell-off of Rock Band developer Harmonix by Viacom Inc. in a move with presumably similar causes.  No word yet on what the cancellation means for users of the Guitar Hero Music Studio and their creations, although the AP article does mention that a large chunk of Activision's revenue has been coming through DLC and related online content.  Read the full Associated Press article HERE.

I was never a fan of playing fake music instruments so, no big deal to me. I've been in 8 different bands throughout my life and the real thing is definitely more satisfying but comes with the harsh reality of fighting among bandmates, girls, drugs, gigs falling through and money issues. I always knew this fad wouldn't last, yet I fell into buying a kinect, which also seems like an equaly short-lived trend. Maybe this will leave them in a position to come up with a new IP and concentrate on some other genres of video games.
